Bench Grinding Rest for Model Engineer – Harold Hall

Bench Grinding Rest for Model Engineer – Harold Hall

by | Feb 4, 2024

YouTube Video VVU4d1loOUFGektOMmZNUkdLMkJiNlpBLnlETklEaVZlOUhj This is the advanced grinding rest designed Harold Hall in his book, Milling - A Complete Course in the Workshop Practice series. I have wanted one for several years but never had time to dedicate to making one. I was lucky enough to pick one up and this video shows the initial setup and first use.

Diesel Heater Thermostat Controller with ESP32 and RF Module

by | Feb 2, 2024

YouTube Video VVU4d1loOUFGektOMmZNUkdLMkJiNlpBLjk1WFhKVmp5UHdJ I used an ESP32 module hooked up to a 18B20 temperature sensor to monitor room temperature. I recorded the heaters on and off RF signal and used a 433mhz RF module to turn the heater on and off at the desired temperature. I also used a fuel float sensor to monitor fuel levels. This all works using the Blynk app to build a custom mobile phone console meaning the whole thing is controlled using your phone from anywhere!
This is just a short video showing the proof of concept and I’ll write up and post more details if anyone is interested in copying the idea. Thanks for watching!

Die Filer or Bench Filing Machine for Engineer & Clockmaking

Die Filer or Bench Filing Machine for Engineer & Clockmaking

by | Jan 8, 2024

YouTube Video VVU4d1loOUFGektOMmZNUkdLMkJiNlpBLkVhWlVOVDl3c2lZ This a Hemingway filing attachment. One important aspect I missed in the video is that unlike a commercial did filer, requiring specialist files, this uses standard files installed upside down and therefore cuts on the down stroke. I picked this machine up a number of years
ago but it was dirty and needed a strip and rebuild. I decided to paint some of the main castings and strip and clean the rest of it. I believe this Hemingway kit was originally designed to be used in a lathe. However this one has a 44RPM geared motor making it more versatile, quick and easy to use. I admit, I’d probably speed it up a touch if I could - maybe 55rpm. I had a butterfly die filed many years ago but that was way to quick and aggressive so there is a balance point in terms of speed for small work.

Cowells Lathe 90ME and 90CW

by | Jan 6, 2024

YouTube Video VVU4d1loOUFGektOMmZNUkdLMkJiNlpBLlZraDhuaGZmR0g0 A comparison between the Cowells 90ME and the 90CW. The 90ME is a more versatile model engineering lathe. The CW is the clock and watchmakers lathe. Whilst both share many castings, the CW really appeals to clockmakers due to the spindle directly accepting 8mm watchmakers collets. The original CW or earlier models were quite limiting, with the spindle only accepting collets. However the newer version, like in this video, still retains the 8mm collet holder but also a 22mm register which fits an adaptor to provide a M14x1 thread allowing all the ME spindle attachments (and chucks) to fit! I think this makes the CW much more versatile. However the ME is probably the preferred choice for less specialised and general model engineering use. Maybe got one of each! :-) Thanks for watching.
