Workshop tour 2023
I did a workshop tour back in 2016 and whilst I`ve not been overly active over the last few years, there have been some updates to the workshop. We now have a large CNC router which was quite a significant investment that I purchased about 2019. The Boxford is still going strong but it likely to be replaced in the next few years. I also have a Cowells lathe ready to come in from the house, but as this video was taken mid-December, my wife and children were adamant that I wasn`t allowed it until Christmas day, so perhaps a separate videos on this later in the year.
** Correction to the video. The Peatol lathe does NOT have the same headstock as the Cowells!
I watched your excellent videos on the tower clock build, and have started the project myself. One question I have is that all the photos show the gear teeth as deep cut , whereas my gear teeth are a lot shallower. I am using a Module1 cutter for 34_150 teeth, cutting to 0.089inches depth.
I would appreciate any help please on depth of cut when gear forming
Kind regards

Good morning,
I used a PP Thornton Mod 1 Wheel cutter and blued the edge of my wheel blank. Whilst I full accept the formula gives a “known” depth of cut for the teeth, I run the wheel cutter into the blank and cut two teeth, moving back and forward between the two until one tooth is formed and a tiny final trace of layout blue is shown on the tooth top – almost nothing showing. I then know I`ve taken the appropriate cut for the wheel cutter to make the tooth form. I use this method to mark my final depth of cut rather than any theoretic value. I have just measured the depth of cut on the centre wheel and its approx 3.1mm from tooth tip to the root of the tooth. I hope that helps. Chris
